Full Moon Lore

For many, the full moon is a source of wonderment and mystery. For others, it is a superstitious omen of bad things to come. Whatever the belief about it, one thing is certain, the moon is a symbol that everyone knows at least a little something about. For pagans and non-pagans alike, a pull can be felt on nights of the full moon that calls for excitement and fascination. From werewolves to tides, the power of the moon is undeniable. We, as pagans, hold many beliefs about the moon. It is a symbol of the great Goddess, a symbol of our power and a symbol of the cycles of life. Scientifically, we know that the moon influences the tides of the ocean. Magically, we hold several theories about the purpose of the moon. Many believe that as the moon waxes and wanes, so waxes and wanes our power. Meaning that on the night of the full moon a witch may be at his/her most powerful. Others believe that the full moon draws out supernatural beings, such as fairies, werewolves, trolls, and gnomes, ect. Numerous witches feel that working with such creatures heightens the effectiveness of their magical workings and will often wait for the full moon to call upon these beings to aid in "big time" work. Others still, feel that the full moon opens a doorway between our world and the next and that full moon nights are the best times to do work with the spiritual world. And almost all, regardless of path, feel that the full moon influences personality changes in people. Everyone at some point in their life has heard the phrase "the full moon brings out the crazies." or something similar, which is what gives us term "lunacy" or "lunatic'.  For centuries, it's been believed that the full moon stirs a longing for excitement and removes inhibitions. Though there are more theories and beliefs about the moon than anyone person can count, what we know for sure, is that when she is full, round, and heavy and shining in all her glory, no one can deny her beauty.
